Welcome Home Daddy!

Amelia, Smarty Jones and Annie T. Dog
welcoming Daddy home from work.

Annie 'The' Dog is getting older and
in her golden years, she sometimes
gets a bit confused about which bed is hers
much to the chagrin of Smarty Jones.

This is really ridiculous.

The end, and a new beginning: 2008

Our house: Christmas 07

It's been a while since an update happened here. It seems like the last part of the fall flew by with classes, work and parenting; blogging took second fiddle to all that. But a lot happened in Amelia's world in the last few months...

2007 ended with a funeral. Amelia's great-grandmother passed away. She was lucky to know her 'Bedeau' for the last two years and I was lucky to have a grandmother in my life for so long.

My grandmother's world growing up was startlingly different than the one my daughter will experience. We have so much more information available on the ways to raise children now but the world seems so much more complex. When my grandmother grew up it was extended family who raised children. You lived near or sometimes in the same house with your grandparents and aunts and uncles. Life for us dictates sending our daughter to 'school' while both of us work. Amelia's extended family live in distant towns or other states. I'm not saying day care is bad, it's a fact of modern life. We delegate the care of our children and elderly to others because contemporary life necessitates it. However, it makes me sad to see so much cultural capital lost with the passing of my grandmother. She takes with her a way of life that may not exist anymore. It seems in a way a more romantic time when families and communities depended on each other. Also sad is that her passing came right before Christmas. It was a hard way to start the holidays but we tried to make the most of it and visited our families and friends afar...

First stop: Amelia's cousins and our family get together here in Michigan. 'The girls' made the most of their time together:

Next stop: Lexington, the Bluegrass State to spend time with Amelia's other cousins, aunts and uncles and grandparents:

Then off to New York for a hopeful New Years with friends and a little time in the Big Apple to enjoy everything it has to offer, which is - everything you could want!:

Wave Hill and Little Italy-Bronx

the Baked Zitti - Little Italy and the NY transit Authority

Our family and friends are so dear to us and to have them and Amelia together means so much. When one of them passes - it's indeed tragic so these times together even though they're infrequent are invaluable. Happy New Year to them all and to to all of you everywhere and here's to a hopeful 08!
